There is a day that honors senior citizens. National Seniors Citizens day occurs each year on August 21st. President Ronald Reagan established this day in 1988 with the proclamation, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”
On National Senior Citizens Day we are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the importance and contribution of seniors to family and society. Seniors can take advantage of many specials and discounts. Here are some ways that you can celebrate seniors on Senior Citizens Day and year round:
Besides National Senior Citizens day there is also a day to celebrate all seniors that are grandparents. National Grandparents Day occurs in the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day each year.
Seniors are definitely worthy of a day (or two) that honors them. However, we should not only honor seniors on this day, but make sure to show the senior citizens in our lives how special they are everyday!
