An individual is eligible to apply for social security benefits at age 61 years and 9 months or anytime afterwards. Here are the different ways you can apply for your social security retirement benefits:
Online: Visit SocialSecurity.gov and fill out the online application.
By Phone: Apply over the phone by calling 1-800-772-1213. Deaf or hard of hearing can call TTY 1-800-325-0778 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday – Friday.
In person: Visit your local Social Security office (Call the above number to make an appointment and find the office nearest you).
You will need to be prepared to have the following information when you apply: Social Security number, Birth Certificate, W-2 form or Self-employment Tax Return for last year, Military Discharge papers if applicable, and the name of your bank and account number for direct deposit of benefits. Benefits should start the first full month after you reach the age of 62. Note that you can also receive a “Social Security Statement” showing your estimated future benefits and how to apply for them.
